After being made redundant from his job in a factory, 33-year-old Shaun Whickett was told about a Construction Gateway programme offered by the college by his Jobcentre work coach – and after completing the four-week course was offered a job in the industry!

Shaun said: “I’m really pleased I signed up for the course – we covered basic construction skills as well as site regulations and health and safety, and I got my CSCS card which you need to work on a building site.

“At the end of the course you’re guaranteed an interview with an industry employer.  I was  interviewed by Stave-Con – a local engineering and groundworks contractor – and was offered a job straight away.

“Before I did the course I was working in a factory earning the minimum wage, but the future looks much brighter now – I feel very proud of what I’ve achieved and it shows that if you work hard and put your mind to something you can change your life for the better.”
