After completing an engineering apprenticeship, and working for three years as a trainee engineer, Holly Winby wanted to progress and work in the health and safety construction industry. Holly was advised to enrol at the college to complete the Nebosh National General Certificate (NNGC). This was the first step into her dream career of working in the health and safety industry.

Holly said: “The NNGC has given me a solid foundation in the knowledge of health and safety legislation. This has included an understanding of ergonomics, manual handling, fire safety, working at height, COSHH, PPE, electricity, work equipment, overview of the most common health conditions and diseases, how to complete risk assessments, how to review documents, and reporting of accidents and incidents. With such a fantastic base knowledge, I feel confident that I could walk into most health and safety jobs feeling prepared for the role, and ready to be a benefit to the company.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It was well structured and taught by a tutor who really understood the educational requirements and the subject of health and safety inside out. The students on the course were varying ages, from different industries, and all at different levels of health and safety knowledge/experience.

“To anyone interested in health and safety as a future career, and thinking about doing this course, I would say do it! It is such a beneficial course and employers really value it as it is an accredited qualification. I am looking forward to starting my career in the health and safety industry.”

Holly is currently on a two week work placement at Speller Metcalfe and even got the chance to visit the City of Wolverhampton College new ATAC site which is currently under development. Check it out here.
