After working in the health and social care sector for a number of years, 38-year-old Kartika Mitchell wanted a career change and to work in the beauty industry, an area that has always interested her.

Kartika, who is studying for the Level 2 diploma in beauty therapy, said: “I wanted a course that included waxing, and not many colleges offer it, so I was pleased when I found this one.

“As well as learning how to do massages, facials and waxing, I’m also learning about things I never thought about before, such as different skin types, hair follicles and the importance of carrying out in-depth client consultations before any treatment is started – there’s so much more to it than I thought.

“The tutor is really good – she listens and she gives her time and feedback about how we can improve our technique, and everyone in the class supports each other too.

“I’ve shown that there’s always room to learn and when I finish the course I either want to become self-employed and work from home or work as part of a team in a salon.”
