Staff from City of Wolverhampton College will be going back to future in a Delorean-inspired soapbox kart and aiming for victory when the Krazy Races derby comes to town on August bank holiday Monday.

The Back to the (Defining) Futures team – a play on the college’s Defining Futures strapline – has spent the last four months sourcing parts and building the four-wheeler which pays homage to the famous time travelling car featured in the Back to the Future film.

The team of three automotive and engineering tutors have combined their DIY, automotive and engineering skills to create the road-worthy kart which will proudly sport the college logo on race day.

Team member Dan Shorter, an engineering tutor at the college’s Paget Road campus, said: “The project has been a great opportunity to work with my colleagues in the automotive department and combine our skills and knowledge to build the kart and demonstrate what we were doing to students from both subject areas.

“We’re really looking forward to race day and hope that our kart will stand up to the challenges of the course and that we can proudly lift the winner’s trophy!”

The Krazy races soapbox derby takes place on Monday, 28 August and will see teams of competitors cheer on teams in hand-crafted karts tackle a 350m obstacle course in the city centre.
