19-year-old Promise Anoke moved to the UK in 2020 and, because she didn’t have the required GCSEs to enrol on a business course, enrolled for the one-year GAP programme instead.

Promise, who has now progressed to the Level 1 diploma in business, said: “The GAP course teaches you employability skills – such as timekeeping, working with others and presentation skills.

“I also did English and maths functional skills as part of the course and I’d recommend it as a good place to start as it improves your confidence and makes you feel good about yourself and the work that you do.

“Since starting the business diploma in September we’ve been looking at what makes good business logos and straplines and had to produce one ourselves for a wireless charger. We had to research the target audience, produce a design and explain our choice to the rest of the group.

“I enjoy coming to college and, after completing this course I want to progress to the Access to HE (business and management) diploma and then go to university to study commerce.”
