21-year-old Thomas Adams is coming to the end of his time at the college and spoke to us about the supported internship he’s doing as part of the college’s Futures programme.

Thomas said:  “I’ve been at college since 2019 and I’m not looking forward to leaving!

“The tutors made sure I understood the work I needed to do and explained things to me if I got stuck.

“The tutors taught me how to apply for a job and fill in an application form, and they did a mock interview to help me prepare and made sure I talked about my skills and interest.

“They also taught me about timekeeping and how to be ready to start work on time and have also helped me to become more confident and encouraged me to speak up as I’m quite shy, even if I know the answer to something.

“I started my work placement in a tea shop – clearing tables, washing up and keeping everywhere tidy – but it wasn’t for me, so I moved to a Cancer Research shop and have been sorting children’s clothes into age order.

“The supported internship is good as it helps you get experience in different areas and a taste of real working life, and I hope to get a job in a charity shop in the future.”
