Alesha Thompson is studying Level 2 Professional Cookery at City of Wolverhampton College. What began as a temporary choice has grown into a genuine passion, helping her build confidence, new skills, and a clear direction for the future.
“I originally chose this course as something to do until I turned 18. I left sixth form at 16 and decided to give college a try, but I never planned for it to be permanent. I picked Professional Cookery because I’ve always loved cooking and thought it would be something I’d enjoy and find easy.
“Since starting, I’ve developed key skills needed to work in a kitchen—teamwork, communication, new knife skills and the ability to make dishes I would never have attempted before. I’ve also come out of my shell so much. Before joining, I wouldn’t have made new friends, but now I have a wide group of friends and feel far more confident in who I am.
“One of the best parts of the course is the people you meet. You make friends with similar interests, and working in a kitchen together helps build great communication while still having fun. This course has encouraged me to try new things too—even dishes I’d never have ordered for myself at a restaurant before learning how to cook them.
“To anyone thinking about coming to college, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s really sociable and offers much more freedom than school. You get to make your own choices, grow more independent, and learn in an environment that helps you shape your future.”
