Awa Awa is currently studying on the GAP programme at City of Wolverhampton College, developing key personal, social and workplace skills that will support his future progression into IT and computing.
“On this course we don’t just sit in a classroom all day — it’s very skills‑based. We learn things like communication, teamwork, confidence‑building and stepping out of our comfort zones. We also look at workplace expectations, such as customer service, speaking to managers or HR, and understanding how to present yourself professionally. It’s really helped me become more organised and aware of responsibilities both in work and in my personal life.
“Since starting, I’ve developed a lot as a person. I’m much more confident speaking to people, communicating in groups and understanding different backgrounds. I’ve learned how to apply myself in new situations, including real‑world scenarios in environments like care homes, and I’ve become more willing to help others even if they don’t always ask for it — because people appreciate support in the long run.
“My plan for the future is to progress into IT. I want to continue to Level 2 and Level 3 Computing here at the college. I’m aiming for an apprenticeship because it gives me the hands‑on experience you need in the tech industry and lets you learn workplace skills directly on the job.
“To anyone thinking about coming to college, I’d say come with the mindset that you’re ready to learn and grow. It won’t always be easy, and tutors won’t spoon‑feed you — but that’s a good thing. The tutors here go above and beyond to support you, help you enjoy your learning and prepare you for the real world. College is a place to make friends, get support, build independence and create your future. You’ll be appreciated and helped every step of the way.”
