Returning to education after several years away from the classroom, Deborah Smith joined the Skills for Success course at City of Wolverhampton College to build her confidence and refresh her knowledge in key subjects. What started as a way to support her son through his GCSEs soon became the first step towards a new career ambition – working as a support worker at the college.
“I originally came back to study to understand and help my son with his GCSEs, when I realised I didn’t understand most of it! Now I’m continuing to study because I’d like to work at the college as a support worker.
“The Skills for Success course improved my knowledge in maths, English and digital skills. It helped me acknowledge my weak areas and gave me the support I needed to improve them. The difference in my confidence from the first day to now is amazing.
“Both of the course tutors were absolutely brilliant and extremely knowledgeable. They treated all students equally, even though we were all at different levels. I can’t thank them enough for helping me achieve so much.
“You are never too old to try something new and with supportive tutors, it’s easier than you think. This course would suit anyone from any background, especially us older people who have forgotten most of what we learnt at school. I thoroughly recommend this course and the college.”
