African born Kaddy Keita, joined City of Wolverhampton College to improve her English and maths skills after moving to the UK. Having had little formal education growing up in Africa, she was determined to build her confidence and independence through learning. Kaddy said:
“I wanted to come to college because I realised how important it is to read and write. Even simple things like taking the bus or reading letters were difficult. I didn’t want to rely on others, especially with my child starting school, so I decided to push myself and learn.”
“Since starting my course, I’ve made a lot of progress. Before, I couldn’t read at all, but now I can read and spell. I feel much more confident travelling on my own because I can read signs at bus stops and train stations. It has made a big difference to my daily life.”
“The support from the college has been amazing. My tutor has been very patient and has helped me a lot. I attend all my classes and often spend extra time practising. I’m really committed to learning and improving my skills.”
“I’m still exploring my options for the future, but I now understand there are many opportunities available once I complete my qualifications. The course has opened my eyes to what I can achieve.”
“To anyone thinking about coming to college, I would definitely recommend it. Even if you are busy, try to attend, because it really helps — not just for you, but for your children too. It gives you confidence, helps you support their learning, and opens up better opportunities for the future.”
