Students at City of Wolverhampton College with special educational needs and disabilities are set to showcase their creative talents in an exhibition next week.

The ‘I am who I am’ exhibition – at the Mander Centre Community Hub on Monday, 18 May – will feature artwork produced by students from the college’s futures foundation learning programme which was inspired by recent work experience placements.

The individual and collaborative art – which also includes personal interpretations of the style of classic artists – will be on display from 12pm to 2pm and visitors to the exhibition will have the opportunity to talk to the students about their projects and watch videos of them at work in the local community.

Student Kyle Smith, aged 21, said: “I have learnt so many new skills by going to work placements and the experiences helped me grow and believe in myself more. And creating my artwork has helped me to express my feelings and emotions in a way that I sometimes can’t put into words.”

Ricki Sidhu, tutor on the futures programme, said: “During placements, the students’ confidence and communication skills improved noticeably and they are looking forward to talking to visitors about how their experiences inspired their artwork.”

The futures foundation learning programme is aimed at students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) or an educational health and care plan (EHCP) and supports them to develop skills and confidence to progress to a college course, employment or independent living – get more details here
