Cara Jones

Course: NIS Gateway to Rail

Cara Jones, 40, from Chelmsley Wood, is confidently stepping into a new chapter — one rooted in purpose, lived experience, and a passion for helping others.

“After studying performing arts at Coalfield College, my plans shifted when I became a mother. I didn’t finish my last year because I fell pregnant with my son. For around eight years, I was focused on raising my son and daughter.”

“Once my children were older, I returned to work, taking on roles in retail and pubs, starting with collecting glasses and eventually working behind the bar. Then in 2021, I landed a cleaning role on the HS2 project. That job lasted three years and gave me real confidence. I enjoyed it and felt good at it.”

“Though proud of that experience, I’m now looking to upskill and move into a new direction — health and safety. It’s something I’m really interested in. I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety after losing my dad, and my daughter’s had mental health challenges too. I think those experiences give me an understanding of how people feel when they’re at their lowest. I just want to help.”

“The course has helped solidify that ambition. I’ve absolutely loved it. I already had some knowledge from HS2, but I’ve learnt loads, especially around asbestos and working at height. I’ve also got my first aid and fire marshal certificates, but even there, I picked up new things.”

“I credit the trainers for creating such a positive environment. Joseph, Shaun, and Wayne have been brilliant — outspoken, approachable, and they’ve made us laugh. The group I was with was great too. We’ve all just clicked. I’ve honestly had a blast.”

“Now, equipped with renewed confidence and new qualifications, I’m ready to take my next step — one that brings my skills, empathy, and ambition together in a career that truly matters.”
