At 20, Mark Walvin began a Polymer Processing Technician Apprenticeship with Polypipe Civils and Green Urbanisation in Horncastle, Lincolnshire. Starting in January 2024 and due to complete in October 2025, the apprenticeship is giving him the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the polymer industry while working towards a recognised qualification. Mark said:
“After finishing my A-levels, I originally applied for a master’s degree in mechanical engineering at university, but I soon realised I wanted something more practical and hands-on. The idea of learning in a real working environment, while still gaining qualifications, really appealed to me – it gives me the best of both worlds. When I approached Polypipe, they were very interested to take me on board, and I’ve enjoyed learning new technologies and contributing to improvements in the factory.
No two days are the same. My role involves tool changes on injection moulding machines, running production, and carrying out quality checks, as well as learning from skilled colleagues. The apprenticeship is also helping me to build confidence, improve my communication, and manage my time effectively.
Looking ahead, I want to continue developing my career within the polymer industry and eventually move into a senior role in production or process engineering, where I can apply my knowledge to improve processes and support future apprentices.”
From his assessor, Phillip Suddaby:
“Right from the start of his apprenticeship Mark has surged ahead and more than demonstrated his technical knowledge and day-to-day skills to a very high level, making him stand out from the other apprentices. He has a thirst for the subject matter and always looks at innovative ways to develop and demonstrate his newly acquired skills.
Mark has also undertaken and passed IMT 4 – advanced problem-solving and process optimisation – meaning he is trained to Level 4 standard. He will be a great asset to his company and prove himself as an exceptional Processing Technician. Good luck Mark.”
