Running 6.00pm – 9.00pm on a Tuesday or Thursday
Would you like to work on a construction site? Take your first step towards a career as a bricklayer in the construction industry with this very practical qualification.
You will learn in our dedicated Construction Innovation Centre at the Wellington Road campus and develop a range of practical skills, including brickwork to damp proof course level, corner construction and basic garden walling.
You will also study some practical elements, including health and safety and the principles of building set out by City and Guilds, the qualification awarding body.
On successful completion of the course you will be able to progress to the industry-recognised Level 2 diploma in bricklaying or other qualifications in groundworks or plant training and gain your CSCS card, required to work on a construction site.
Also, if you earn less than £32,000 per year and aged 19 or over, you could study this course for FREE!
Course details
Entry Requirements:
To access this course you are required to:
- Have three or more GCSEs at grade 2 or above (including Maths and English)*
- Attend an interview with a member of the college’s admissions team
- Complete a short online assessment to determine your current skills and knowledge
You will also be expected to commit to good attendance and punctuality and demonstrate a commitment and good attitude to learning and achieving the qualification.
*Adults without the necessary qualifications but with relevant work/life experience will be considered on an individual basis.
What will I learn?
During this course you will study the following modules:
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
- Contribute to setting out and building of masonry structures up to damp proof course
- Carrying out blocklaying activities
- Carrying out cavity walling activities
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
What skills will I gain?
By studying this course you will:
- Learn about bricklaying techniques in practical and theory sessions
- Find out about health and safety on construction sites and how important it is
- Develop your communication skills
- Improve your numeracy and literacy skills to prepare you for a life in construction
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be constantly assessed t monitor your progress and identify any areas where you may need extra support.
You will be assessed in the following ways:
- Practical assessments
- Multiple choice assessments at the end of each unit
- On-line tests
To gain the diploma you pass all units and practical tests.
What can I do next?
The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to progress onto the Level 2 diploma in bricklaying or other industry qualifications.
