The electric/hybrid vehicle sector is one of the fastest-growing industries but, currently only 15% of vehicle technicians are trained in the latest technology.

If you want to be part of this rapidly-growing sector, this free training course will teach you the skills and knowledge you need to apply for jobs in the sector.

You will study a range of units and, on successful completion of the programme, will gain an Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) accredited qualification and be guaranteed an interview with an employer looking to take on new staff.

Please note – to access this course, you will need to have successfully completed the Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness IMI Level 1 course, unless you already have suitable and relevant industry experience. 

Where is the training held?

All courses are held at the college’s dedicated Electric Vehicle and Green Technologies Centre at Planetary Way, in Wednesfield.

The centre offers:

  • Modern open-plan workshop
  • Electric vehicle and hybrid training system with deactivated high voltage system for safe training
  • Fully compliant electric vehicle tool kit and protective personal equipment
  • Fully operational hybrid and electric vehicles
  • Three modern, state-of-the-art training rooms
  • Blended learning using a fully interactive digital training platform
  • IT equipment for use when on site
  • Experienced and qualified trainers who specialise in electric vehicle training

 

How long is the course?

This course is five days a week for four weeks.

To have an interview with an industry employer you will be expected to attend all programmed training sessions and successfully complete the course.

 

This course is part of the college’s Into Employment programme funded by West Midlands Combined Authority to equip local people with the skills needed to work in priority sectors across the region and support employers who are looking to recruit new staff.

The course covers a range of units, including:

  • Electrical principles
  • Health and safety relating to high voltage vehicles
  • Hazards and reducing risks associated with electric/hybrid vehicles
  • Electric/hybrid vehicle system layout and components
  • Types of high voltage charging connections
  • Safe preparation of vehicles when carrying out recovery
  • Safe working practices and hazard management of high voltage vehicles
