Is this course right for me?
If you want a career in engineering, this course will give you an in depth knowledge of the industry and enable you to learn skills in a work-related environment.
You will develop your understanding of the theory behind engineering principles, engineering technology and technical information and learn through a combination of practical and classroom-based sessions.
This is a two year full-time course – the equivalent of 3 A levels – and, as part of the qualification, you will be required to undertake a work experience placement in a relevant industry setting.

You will train at the new purpose-built £8.1 million purpose-built Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston, which boasts a 12-bay automotive workshop, a drive-in electric vehicle lab containing simulated training boards, a four-wheel laser alignment machine, and ADAS and Bosch diagnostic equipment.

Entry Requirements:
To access this course you are required to have:
- Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including maths and English, and preferably science
As part of the admissions process you will be required to attend an interview with an admissions tutor and complete an online assessment based on engineering principles
What will I learn?

- Engineering principles
- Engineering design
- Working effectively as a team
- Commercial and quality principles
- Calculus
- Microcontrollers
You will also have the opportunity to study a range of optional units including:
- Machining techniques
- Computer aided design
- Analogue electrical circuits
- Project
- Maintenance of mechanical systems
- Welding
- Fabrication
- Electro-electronic circuits
What skills will I gain?
By studying this course you will:
- Gain a an understanding of industry level skills
- Understand the importance of health and safety in the workplace
- Develop your maths skills, based around engineering principles
How will I be assessed?
Throughout the course you will be assessed in the following ways:
- Practical observation
- Assignment
- Externally-marked assessments
You will work towards achieving an overall grade for the qualification - pass/merit/distinction - along with individual grades for each unit taken.
What can I do next?
Completion of the course will enable you to:
- Pursue an engineering apprenticeship
- Progress to the BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in mechanical engineering
- Apply for a job in the engineering industry
