Is this course right for me?
If you want to work as a hairdresser this course will set you on the path to a successful career in the industry.
You will gain skills, experience and confidence in styling hair and learn about customer service and health and safety in the salon.
To enhance your learning, you will also get chance to take part in enrichment weeks during which you will be able to learn new techniques, take part in competitions, and complete additional short courses in areas that would be useful to you in the industry, such as hair extensions, wedding hair, creative styling an ear piercing.
Please note: you will be expected to arrange the work experience placement yourself and will also be required to purchase your own hairdressing kit, costing approximately £180, as well as a college-braded uniform costing approximately £50 – order forms will be provided before the start of the course and financial support may be available to help with these costs.
On completion of the course you will be able to progress to a Level 2 hair or beauty qualification.
Course details
Entry Requirements:
To access this course you are required to have:
- Three or more GCSEs at grade 1 or above including English and/or maths
- Undertake a salon skills session in which you will be required to meet members of the teaching team and demonstrate twisting and plaiting the hair
- Purchase a hairdressing kit and college-branded uniform (details will be provided at enrolment)
What will I learn?
During this course you will study the following modules:
- Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
- Presenting a professional image in a salon
- Shampoo and conditioning
- Styling women’s hair
- Plaiting and twisting hair
- Colour hair using a temporary colour
- Create a hair and beauty image
- Follow health and safety in the salon
- Working with others in the hair and beauty sector
- Create and image using colour for the hair and beauty sector
- Salon reception duties
- The art of colouring hair
In addition, if you do not have English and/or maths at grade 4 you will be required to study for the relevant subject as part of your course.
What skills will I gain?
By studying this course you will:
- Gain an understanding of the hair and beauty industry
- Learn how to create basic styling looks
- Learn about colouring hair
- Understand the importance of health and safety in the salon
- Work as part of a team in the salon
- Develop communication and customer service skills
