With the expansion of train lines and tram routes across the region, there is an increasing demand for trained groundwork operatives to meet the demands of the rail industry.
Whichever area of the industry you want to work in, this free training course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to apply for jobs in the sector.
You will gain an overview of working in the industry and study a range of units – including small tools, overhead line electrification and health and safety – and, on successful completion of the course, will be guaranteed an interview with an employer looking to take on staff to fill current vacancies.
How long is the course?
The course runs five days a week for six weeks
To have an interview with an industry employer you will be expected to attend all programmed training sessions and successfully complete the course.
Where is the training held?
All courses are held at the college’s dedicated rail track training centre on the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston.
The site offers:
- 40 metres of rail track
- Industry-standard installation and maintenance equipment
- Experienced and qualified trainers
This course is part of the college’s Into Employment programme funded by West Midlands Combined Authority to equip local people with the skills needed to work in priority sectors across the region and support employers who are looking to recruit new staff.

- Rail awareness
- Small tools awareness
- Personal Track Safety (PTS)
- Overhead Line Electrification Construction (OLEC)
- DC Conductor Rails (DCCR)
- Track induction course (TIC)
- Emergency first aid at work
