Is this apprenticeship right for me?

Machining technicians work as part of a defined or cross-functional team and typically report to an engineering or manufascturing team leader.

In their daily work, they will interact with other machining technicians and colleagues from other departments, as well as with customers, suppliers, quality auditors and regulators

Entry Requirements:

To access this course, applicants are required to have:

Five GCSEs at Grade 4-9, including maths at minimum Grade 5 and English at minimum Grade 4.

What will I learn?

Apprentices will gain knowledge and understanding enabling them to:

  • Conduct safety checks and performance monitoring for machining, associated equipment and surrounding work area
  • Receive, read and interpret engineering data and documentation, engineering drawings and technical data
  • Contribute to or plan the day’s machining schedule
  • Check and inspect materials to be machined to ensure that they conform to quality standards
  • Identify and report any issues or faults such as incorrect grades, dimensions and thicknesses
  • Inspect components produced
  • Adjust the machining equipment or programme and tooling to ensure components meet quality requirements

What skills will I gain?

Apprentices will gain skills in:

  • Obtaining, checking and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation)
  • Working safely at all times, complying with health, safety and environmental legislation, regulations and organisational requirements.
  • Planning and where applicable obtaining all the resources required to undertake the work activity
  • Undertaking the work activity using the correct processes, procedures and equipment.
  • Carrying out the required checks (such as quality, compliance or testing) using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment.
  • Dealing promptly and effectively with engineering/manufacturing problems within the limits of their responsibility using approved diagnostic methods and techniques and report those which cannot be resolved to the appropriate personnel.

How will I be assessed?

Throughout the programme the apprentice will be visited in the workplace by a qualified assessor.

What can I do next?

Successful completion of the programe will enable the apprentice to progress to:

  • Engineering Level 4 HNC
  • Engineering Level 4 HTQ
  • Employment in a relevant role in the industry

You will combine working for the company with studying towards occupational standards set by employers – usually attending college one day per week – and will train in the brand new Advanced Technology and Automotive Centre at the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston.
