Is this apprenticeship right for me?

Plumbing and domestic heating technicians plan, select, install, service, commission and maintain all aspects of plumbing and heating systems.

Appliances and equipment can include gas, oil and solid fuel boilers as well as pumps, heat emitters, bathroom furniture or controls as part of a cold water, hot water, and central heating or above ground drainage and rainwater systems, as well as new and exciting environmental technologies like heat pumps, solar thermal systems, biomass boilers and water recycling systems.

Installation of plumbing and heating systems requires accurate skills in measuring, marking, cutting, bending and jointing metallic and non-metallic pipework; as well as excellent customer service skills and being tidy and respectful as they can often find themselves working in customers’ homes as well as on building sites.

Plumbing and heating technicians need to be able to work independently or as part of a team and use their knowledge and skills to ensure that both the system and appliances are appropriately selected and correctly installed, often without any supervision, and done so in a safe, efficient and economical manner to minimise waste.

Typical job roles include plumber, domestic heating engineer, domestic heating installer, plumbing and domestic heating installer, plumbing and domestic heating engineer.

Entry Requirements:

Entry requirement for this apprenticeship will be decided by the employer, however a minimum of a Grade C/4 is required in Maths prior to enrolment.

  • Understanding health & safety legislation, codes of practice and safe working methods.
  • Understanding selection, installation, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintenance of core plumbing systems (cold/hot water, heating, drainage, rainwater).
  • Knowing installation and testing principles for electrical components and control systems in plumbing and heating.
  • Understanding plumbing science, heating principles and mechanical processes.
  • Understanding environmental technology systems in domestic settings.
  • Understanding fuel combustion principles, ventilation and flueing for domestic fossil fuel systems.
  • Understanding high‑quality customer service and respecting customers’ properties.
  • Knowing different communication methods and how to adapt communication style.
  • Natural Gas: principles of installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining domestic natural gas systems.
  • Oil: principles of installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining domestic oil systems.
  • Solid Fuel: principles of installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining solid fuel, wood burning and biomass systems.
  • Environmental Technologies: principles of installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining solar thermal, heat pumps and water recycling systems.
  • Working safely following health & safety legislation.
  • Applying installation, testing, commissioning, servicing, maintenance and repair techniques on plumbing and heating systems.
  • Applying installation and testing techniques for electrical components and controls.
  • Taking responsibility for own work, organising others and working in an environmentally responsible way.
  • Natural Gas: selecting, installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining natural gas systems.
  • Oil: selecting, installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining oil systems.
  • Solid Fuel: selecting, installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining solid fuel/biomass systems.
  • Environmental Technologies: selecting, installing, testing, commissioning, servicing and maintaining solar thermal, heat pumps and water recycling systems.
