If you’re interested in understanding how plastics and polymers are made and processed, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to the industry. You’ll explore:
The polymer processing industry – an overview of the UK industry, including the scale of polymers processed and the number of employees in each sector.
Polymer materials – a basic introduction to plastic materials and additive systems.
Injection moulding – key principles and terminology.
Thermoset moulding – the technology and techniques involved.
Extrusion – single and twin screw processing methods.
Blown film extrusion – the production of mono- and multi-layer films.
Extrusion blow moulding – mono-layer and barrier construction techniques.
Vacuum/thermoforming – principles and materials used in the process.
GRP laminating – an overview of the main principles.
Rotational moulding – an introduction to the process and its applications.
The course is mainly theory-based, giving you a solid understanding of all major polymer processing techniques. You’ll also see some processes demonstrated using the specialist equipment at the Polymer Training & Innovation Centre.
