Whether you’re a keen amateur photographer or looking to turn your passion into a career, our UAL Level 2 Award and Certificate in Photography offers a practical introduction to the subject. You’ll explore a wide range of photographic practices, from working in colour and black-and-white to mastering both film and digital cameras in different lighting conditions.

Alongside capturing images, you’ll build essential foundations in photography and develop post-production skills using Photoshop to enhance, edit, or creatively manipulate your work. Whether you’re shooting with a DSLR, mirrorless, or even a smartphone camera, this course will give you the knowledge and confidence to create striking photographs.

Learning takes place in our specialist facilities, which include a photographic studio, graphics studio and darkrooms. You’ll also benefit from access to the wider art and design department, featuring a 3D design workshop, fashion and printmaking studios, digital recording studios, TV studios and editing suites.

All tutors are active professionals in the creative industries, bringing a wealth of knowledge and real-world insight to support your learning and help you progress towards your chosen career.

City of Wolverhampton College is an approved centre for the UAL Awarding Body Level 2 Award and Certificate in Photography.

Entry Requirements:

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Level 2 in English*
  • Knowledge of  Photoshop
  • Ideally, your own digital SLR camera. However, one will be provided during lesson times if you do not have one

*Applications from adults without the necessary qualifications but with relevant experience will be considered on an individual basis.

What will I learn?

  • Basic Photography Techniques: Understand your camera settings, from aperture to shutter speed and ISO.
  • Introduction to Lighting: Learn how natural and artificial light affects your shots and how to control it for the best results.
  • Studio Practice: Get introduced to basic studio equipment and lighting setups, enabling you to take your first steps in controlled environments like portrait or still-life photography.
  • Digital and Analogue Skills: Explore the basics of both modern digital photography and classic film photography.
  • Post-Production: Learn simple image editing techniques to enhance your photos and correct exposure, colour, and composition.

What skills will I gain?

By studying this course you will:

  • Explore appropriate camera techniques
  • Use the studio and other equipment to produce test shots and develop your range of techniques
  • Research and evaluate other photographers’ work
  • Develop and experiment with your own creative images
  • Follow live briefs and fulfil them within the given timescale
  • Produce a portfolio of your work

How will I be assessed?

This is an assignment based course so there are no exams. You will be continually assessed throughout the programme.

What can I do next?

The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to:

  • Progress on to UAL Level 3 Award and Certificate in Photography, or further study in the art and design, photography or graphic design subject area
