If you work in the digital, computing, and IT industry - or aspire to do so - this higher technical qualification (HTQ) will move you a step closer to a career in the specialist field of computer science. 

HTQs were introduced in 2023 and are a great option if you're looking to gain more technical knowledge in your chosen field and are developed by employers to be career-focussed, focus on practical and technical skills, and are flexible and adaptable so that you can fit studying around other commitments.

You will further expand your IT knowledge and develop a range of dynamic skills essential for working in the sector - from trouble shooting to software development - and will explore a range of topics enabling you to identify the area you wish to specialise in. 

The course is focussed on future employment in the sector and each subject area you study will be tailored towards jobs available in the industry, meaning you will not only develop technical knowledge but will also develop a range of employability skills preparing you for the competitive job market. 

This programme is classed as a higher technical qualification (HTQ) which are industry-focussed Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications developed by awarding bodies in collaboration with employers and the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE). 

Successful completion of the Level 4 HTQ will enable you to progress to the Level 5 Higher National Diploma 

To access the course you are required to have 48 UCAS points from one of the following: 

  • BTEC National Diploma or Extended Diploma in a relevant subject OR

  • A Levels and AS Levels with at least one subject at A Level

Plus 

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or above OR 

  • Digital T Level with a pass grade.

During the programme you will study the following units:  

  • Programming 

  • Networking 

  • Professional practice 

  • Database design & development 

  • Security 

  • Planning a computing project  

  • Software development lifecycles  

  • Fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) & intelligent systems (optional)*

Upon successfully completing the first year and attaining the Level 4 National Certificate in Computing, you have the option to progress to the Level 5 Higher National Diploma.- link to our course This advanced level allows for specialization, enabling you to commit to specific career paths and progression routes directed toward degree-level study. 

Throughout the programme you will develop skills, qualities and strengths in the following areas:

  • Independent skills: Learning to work autonomously, make informed decisions, and take initiative, cultivating independence and self-reliance.

  • Commercial skills: Gaining insights into the business aspects of computing and an understanding of industry dynamics, market trends, and the ability to apply technical skills in a commercially-relevant context.
