We want you to be as passionate about all areas of computing as we are and we want you to learn, achieve and succeed in your chosen career. This course will give you the knowledge, experience and practical skills you will need to fulfill your computing ambitions.

The course equivalent in size to one and a half A Levels. It is designed for those who are interested in exposure to a range of IT topics that will enhance their progression to higher education in this sector, a complementary sector or a contrasting sector and ultimately lead to employment.

Learners will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business, using IT to communicate and share information, and computational thinking skills together with the principles of designing and developing computer programs.

The course is delivered at the Wellington Road Campus.

To access this course you are required to have:

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including maths, English and one technical subject such as science, IT, graphics, design & technology, etc OR
  •  Level 3 ICT-related qualification at Merit or Distinction

  • Unit 1 Information Technology Systems
  • Unit 2 Creating Systems to Manage Information
  • Unit 3 Using Social Media in Business
  • Unit 4 Programming
  • Unit 5 Data Modelling
  • Unit 7 Mobile Apps Development
  • Unit 8 Computer Games Development

 

 

The course provides transferable knowledge and skills that prepares you for progression to university. The transferable skills that universities and value include:

• The ability to learn independently

• The ability to research actively and methodically

• Being able to give presentations and being active group members.

 

The course provides a vocational context in which learners can develop the knowledge and skills required for particular degree courses, including:

• Reading technical texts

• Effective writing

• Analytical skills

• Creative development

• Preparation for assessment methods used in degrees.

Two units are externally assessed.

Five units are internally assessed.

On successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to progress onto the Extended Diplomaa HNC/D or Undergraduate Degree programme such as Computer Science, Games Development, Computing and Web Page Design etc or a level 4 Apprenticeship.
