If you want to work in uniformed public services, this course is the first step to your future career!

You will learn important skills - including communication, planning and team work - which are vital for a career in the armed forces, police, fire and ambulance service, prison service or customs and revenue, as well as if you want to work in the leisure industry or do community or youth work.

As part of the course you will also:

  • Improve your fitness
  • Take part in outward-bound expedition
  • Take part in a one-day Armed Forces Midlands Challenge  
  • Visit the Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield
  • Visit RAF Cosford
  • Hear from guest speakers from a range of public servicecs including West MIdlands Police and The British Army etc
  • Take part in stop and search workshops
  • Participate in a crime investigation workshop
  • Take part in a multi-day camping expedition 

You will be required to attend lessons to improve your English and maths (or use the time for directed study if you already have Grade 4 or above) and have the opportunity to complete 30 hours of a work experience placement.

You will also be required to purchase a college-branded uniform costing approximately £70 - order forms will be provided before the start of the course and financial support may be available to help with these costs.  

To access this course you are required to:

  • Have three GCSEs, including Grade 1 in maths and/or English
  • Attend an interview with a member of college staff to determine your suitability for the course
  • Show a willingness to learn.

You will also be required to purchase a college-branded uniform - details will be provided prior to enrolment

You will also be required to build a portfolio of evidence gathered throughout the course.   

 

 

These are the skills you will learn from this course which will enable you to:  

  • Progress directly to the Public Services BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate 
  • With further qualifications, pursue a career in the police service, the armed forces, the fire service, prison & probation service, UK Border Force, revenue and customs or youth and community work.  

We have outstanding success rates on our public service provision and excellent feedback from our past students. In fact, our past students have gone on to serve in the Royal Marines, police service, fire service, British Army and in the prison service amongst many other progression opportunities.    

While you are on this course you will get to visit local army reserve units, fire service establishments, orienteering sites, and outdoor activity centres.   

We also have guest speakers who we invite into college to enhance your learning. These have included Royal Navy Careers, West Midlands Police, Army Reserve, Army Careers, RAF Careers.
