Get your career off the ground!

With the expansion of train lines and tram routes in the Midlands and plans for commercial construction projects and large-scale housing developments across the region there is an increasing demand for trained groundwork operatives to meet the demands of the industry.

Whichever area you want to work in, this free training course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to apply for jobs in the sector.

You will gain experience of operating a ride-on roller and work towards gaining your red CPCS card (ride-on roller ticket) and, on successful completion of the course, will be guaranteed an interview with an employer looking to take on new staff.

Whether you're looking for your first job, returning to work or looking to change career, take a look below to see what you'll learn.

What will I learn?

The course covers a range of units necessary for working in the sector, including :

  • Safety, health and environment for construction workers
  • Principles of workplace risk assessments
  • Fire marshalling
  • Manual handling
  • Use of ladders and stepladders
  • Asbestos awareness
  • Mental health awareness
  • Emergency first aid at work
  • CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) - industry recognition of your plant operating skills
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) - proof that you have the appropriate training and qualifications to work on a construction site

How long is the course?

The course is five days a week and, depending on your progress, lasts for between five and six weeks.

To have an interview with an industry employer you will be expected to attend all programmed training sessions and successfully complete the course.

Where is the training held?

All courses are held at the college's dedicated construction site on the Wellington Road campus, in Bilston.

This course is part of the college's Into Employment programme funded by West Midlands Combined Authority to equip local people with the skills needed to work in priority sectors across the region and support employers who are looking to recruit new staff.
