If you want to want to work in the beauty industry and specialise in nail technology, this short 10-week part-time introductory course will teach you the basics of manicure and enable you to progress to the Nail Technology Level 2 Certificate offered by the college

You will learn about all aspects of manicure - including the structure of the nail, fling, shaping and cuticle treatment to prepare the nails for a manicure, how to apply nail varnish and carry out a French manicure - as well as how to apply nourishing treatments and perform a hand and lower arm massage. 

You will also gain additional skills in customer service, client communication, health and safety in the salon, and the promotion of products and services, all of which are transferable across the beauty sector and will be invaluable whichever area of the industry you decide to work in.

Please note: You will be required to bring clients into the salon to enable you to complete your assessments and purchase a manicure kit (costing approximately £31) and a college-branded uniform (costing approximaltely £50) - details will be provided before the start of the course and financial support may be available to help with these costs.

To access this course you are required to:

  • Have three or more GCSEs at grade 3/4 or above including English and/or Maths
  • Perform a trade test and carry out a hand massage or file and polish nails so that tutors can determine your level of knowledge and determine that the course is the right one for you.

*Adults without the necessary qualifications will be required to complete an online assessment in the relevant subject.

During this course you will gain skills in:

  • Maintenance and care procedures for the nails and skin of the hands
  • The application of colour to the nails on the hands
  • French manicure technique
  • Single layer varnishing
  • Multi-layer varnishing
  • Paraffin wax and warm oil treatments for nourishment
  • The study of the structure of the nail
  • Contra-indications to manicure
  • Client consultation techniques
