Health & Social Care NCFE Level 2 Extended Diploma Study Mode: Full Time   |    Course Level: 2

The Level 2 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care will allow you to gain an applied knowledge of the health and social care sector. It will develop your knowledge and understanding of key areas relating to current practice. You will cover seven units through hands-on learning in a number of interesting areas including growth and development, nutrition, communication and equality and diversity. You will also develop your practical skills through a 30-hour placement in a health and social care setting.  

Studying the course will also introduce you to some of the practices being used within health and social care settings such as hospitals, care homes and children's centres. This will include person-centred care, infection prevention and communication strategies. 

As part of the course you will get the chance to upgrade your English and maths skills and tutors will also support you if you wish to progress to the next level of study. Past students on this course have progressed to higher levels of study at the college and then moved on to further study at university. Once qualified, many of our learners have gained employment in health and social care sectors such as nurseries, care homes, residential homes and many other settings.   

This is a one-year full-time course and you will be able to progress onto Level 3 Certificate following successful completion of all elements of the Level 2 Extended Diploma. 


To access this course, you are required to have: 

  • Four or more GCSEs (including English language) at grade 3 (D/E) or above OR 
  • Successful completion of CACHE Level 1 in Health and Social Care with English at grade 3 (D/E) or above
  • Good attendance and punctuality 

Acceptance on the course is subject to an interview and you will also be required to have a satisfactory DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check.

  • Working in health and social care 

  • Infection prevention and control  

  • Nutrition 

By studying this course you will: 

  • Develop your understanding of the issues that need to be considered when working in health and social care environment within a multicultural society and will learn investigative skills as you look at the many factors that contribute to a diverse and equal society 

  • Learn how to communicate effectively within a health and social care environment through the investigation of different forms of communication, understanding barriers to communication and how to be able to communicate effectively 

  • Develop an appreciation of the health and wellbeing needs of others and how these needs may be addressed to improve the health and wellbeing of an individual 

  • Understand how legislation in health and social care environments is applied and develop  knowledge of how to minimise hazards and risks  

  • Improve your time management and organisational skills 

  • Gain valuable team working and communication skills by taking part in whole class and small group discussions and presentations 

You will be continually assessed throughout the programme through project work, assignments, peer assessments, case studies, external tests and workbooks. There is also an external assessment and tests for Functional Skills in English and maths.   

Successful completion of the Level 2 qualification will enable you to: 

  • Progress to the Level 3 CACHE Technical Certificate in Health and Social Care* 
  • Apply for an apprenticeship in health and social care 

*If you want to progress to the Level 3 qualification you will need to achieve Level 2 at grade 4 (C) or above, as well as English and maths at grade 4. 

We have excellent feedback from our past students, some of whom have gone on to study for the Level 3 qualification or progressed to university to study for a degree and gone on to pursue careers in the health and social care profession.  

Throughout the course you will be supported by experienced teachers who will provide training in health and social care, as well as observe and assess your performance in each unit, check and mark your work and give you regular feedback.  They will also support you to develop a portfolio of work and put together your CV or personal statement. 

Following an Ofsted inspection in November 2017, the college maintained its 'Good' rating, with the report highlighting a number of strengths including students' high achievement rates and development of academic, practical and technical knowledge they need for further study or work. 

Whilst you are on this course you will be taught by experts with many years' experience in the field and will have the opportunity to meet with health and social care assessors who will provide first-hand experience of working in the profession.
